Ketosis allows a person to experience nonfluctuating energy throughout the day as well as enhanced brain function and possibly resistance to malignancy. Dr. David Perlmutter

What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic state that occurs when the quantity of ketone bodies in the blood have reached higher-than-normal levels. When the body is in a ketogenic state, this means that lipid (fat) energy metabolism is intact. The body will start breaking down your own body fat to fuel the body’s normal, everyday functions.

Why Do You Want Your Body In Ketosis?

1.Utilization of Fat for Fuel

The main benefit of ketosis is that it increases the body’s ability to utilize fats for fuel, which gets very lazy on a high-carbohydrate diet. When on high-carbohydrate diets, the body can usually expect an energy source to keep entering the body. But in the state of ketosis, the body has to become efficient at mobilizing fats as energy.

2. Fast and Efficient Weight Loss

When we eat carbohydrates, insulin is released as a reaction to elevated blood glucose. Insulin is a storage hormone that signals the cells to store as much available energy as possible, initially as glycogen (storage carbohydrates) and then as fat.

The ketogenic diet works by eliminating carbohydrates from the diet and keeping the body’s carbohydrate stores almost empty, preventing too much insulin from being released during meals. With less insulin around, your body starts burning its own body fat for energy, helping you lose weight quickly. Think about this: Your body will also then continue to burn fat even while you’re sleeping at night. That means your body is burning fat 24/7.

And it’s not just burning the fat you consume — it’s burning body fat. Getting your body into ketosis is most effective way to burn fat fast and lose weight.

3. Appetite Suppression

Another small but very important benefit of the ketogenic diet is that when in the state of ketosis, ketones, along with a high protein intake, seem to suppress appetite. A high-carbohydrate diet, on the other hand, increases hunger levels. Because you have to consume a lot of fat on a ketogenic diet, which hold 9 calories per gram, you are not getting much food volume. It’s not mandatory to be hungry on a reduced-calorie diet.

Other Benefits

Studies have now shown that being in ketosis can have benefits for a wide variety of different health conditions:

  • Heart disease: The ketogenic diet can improve risk factors like body fat, HDL levels, blood pressure and blood sugar (3233).
  • Cancer: The diet is currently being used to treat several types of cancer and slow tumor growth (4343536).
  • Alzheimer’s disease: The diet may reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s and slow down the disease’s progression (53738).
  • Epilepsy: Research has shown that the ketogenic diet can cause massive reductions in seizures in epileptic children (3).
  • Parkinson’s disease: One study found that the diet helped improve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (39).
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome: The ketogenic diet can help reduce insulin levels, which may play a key role in polycystic ovary syndrome (40).
  • Brain injuries: One animal study found that the diet can reduce concussions and aid recovery after brain injury (41).
  • Acne: Lower insulin levels and eating less sugar or processed foods may help improve acne (42).

Please keep in mind that research into many of these areas is far from conclusive.
